One of the best kept secrets in all of California is the Port Hueneme Beach Community. You have to go out of your way to get there and the people who live in this beach community like that. The beaches here are absolutely pristine. There is a beautiful, well maintained park and a fishing pier. Most of the homes here are town homes or condominium style. Many of these homes have excellent ocean views. All of the homes are an easy walk to the beach. Prices range from $250,000 to $700,000.

About Port Hueneme

The City's name derives from a Chumash word (Wene'mu) that means "resting place". Today's Port Hueneme is located halfway between two larger Chumash settlements, today's Malibu and Ventura. The first post office in the community was in Wynema. When Thomas R. Bard laid out the town in 1872, he called it Hueneme. The name was changed to Port Hueneme after the Port of Hueneme was built in 1939.

Incorporated in 1948, Port Hueneme has a 5-member City Council which functions as the policy making governmental body. The five individuals serve staggered four-year terms in office, with the Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem being selected by the City Council each year. City services are structured around eight departments: City Administration, Community Development, Finance, Housing and Facilities Maintenance, Police Department, Public Works, Recreation and Community Services, and Utility Services.

The City of Port Hueneme has seen much dramatic progress since its incorporation. Residents consistently cite the high quality of life offered due to planned development, excellent public facilities and responsive City services as being primary reasons for choosing to live in the City. A commitment to maintain high standards for a clean and attractive appearance of the City continues to be a major priority. The importance of preserving and enhancing existing amenities to ensure the long-term health and vitality of the community is recognized as well.

Port Hueneme has its own hometown police force of 21 sworn officials-one of only five cities in the county with its own police department. With a service area of less than five square miles, response time is generally within five minutes. Crimes per capita are among the lowest in the county.

Hueneme Elementary School District is nationally recognized for its "smart classrooms", and the city's percentage of high school graduates outpaces the County and State. Both Charles Blackstock School and E.O. Green Jr. High have won the Blue Ribbon award, the highest federal honor bestowed on public schools. Off-campus extensions of the California University and State University systems, and a local community college, are also within a 20-minute drive of Port Hueneme.

The Naval Construction Battalion Center (CBC), Port Hueneme, California, is the west coast home port of the Navy's mobile construction force. CBC supports the training and mobilization requirements for more than 2,600 active duty personnel. The CBC also operates a 1,600-acre naval base. The CBC is located on the vast agricultural Oxnard Plain, about 60 miles north of Los Angeles, right on the Beautiful Southern California Coast.

The Port of Hueneme is the only deep water harbor between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area and is the U.S. Port of Entry for California's central coast region. It serves international businesses and ocean carriers from the Pacific Rim and Europe. The Port of Hueneme ranks among the top seaports in California for general cargo throughput.

The niche markets that Hueneme serves include: the import and export of automobiles, fresh fruit and produce, and forest products.

The Port of Hueneme is the top seaport in the United States for citrus export and ranks among the top ten ports in the country for automobile and banana imports.

Its unique positioning near the Santa Barbara Channel has also made the Port of Hueneme the primary support facility for the offshore oil industry in California's Central Coast area.

The Oxnard Harbor District, which is the port authority for the Port of Hueneme, is also the Grantee for U. S. Foreign-Trade Zone #205, a trade enhancing program that is available to support global businesses operating in the region.

Port Hueneme became a Charter City effective December, 1996, following Port Hueneme voter approval in the November, 1996 election.
